  • Researcher, consultant and entrepreneur specialized in operations management and healthcare.
  • Successful tech entrepreneur and investor with a portfolio of companies in the data analytics and medical services sector.
  • Specialized in the design of production systems and guiding the involvement of senior managers in the transformation.
  • Alongside his academic and teaching work, advancing the application of lean to high variability environments, he is responsible for the redesign of patient flow at one of the world’s leading children’s hospitals.

Academic and professional practice

  • As a senior executive in a top tier automotive supplier in the 1980’s he initiated and led an operational improvement program together with the company’s Japanese customers.
  • In the early 1990’s he co-founded the Kaizen Institute of Europe with Masaaki Imai, pioneering the introduction of many lean approaches into European countries.
  • In 1998, he founded the Production System Design Centre in UK, subsequently established in Germany, France, USA and China, described by Jim Womack in his newsletter as ‘the best lean education available anywhere in the world’.
  • For 13 years he led the Manufacturing Practice worldwide at McKinsey & Co.
  • Over the course of the past three decades, he has played a leading role in 10 lean transformations in a range of industries and countries
  • He is a Visiting Professor at the Business School of the University of Buckingham and a scientific researcher the Institute for Production Systems at the Technical University of Dortmund, Germany, where he leads the research group into the management of variability in complex systems.
